Campus-wide research projects that expand ongoing environmental research at UC Irvine
Proposals accepted through November 2009
The environmental challenges confronting us in the 21st century continue to grow. They arise from our need for sustainable energy and other resources and are often caused by global change of our own doing. Solutions require research spanning the science, technology, and human dimensions of these challenges, effectively addressing societal needs. The UC Irvine Environment Institute seeks to encourage the initiation of campus research projects that cut across these three dimensions, extending ongoing research to explore novel approaches addressing the interactions between environment and society, related to global change, energy, and sustainable resources.
The Environment Institute funds short-term, collaborative projects that involve UC Irvine researchers and that expand current environmental research. Fall Quarter proposals are currently being accepted through 30 November 2009 with review and award of funds anticipated in early January 2010. Projects are typically funded at a level $10K to $35K in direct costs for up to 12 months and should involve at least two UCI principal investigators. SeeInstitute Projects on this web site for previously funded projects.
Objective. The Environment Institute campus-wide grants program funds UC Irvine researchers for short-term projects that involve two or more principal investigators, reach across Schools or Departments, form new collaborations, and build upon the internationally recognized work in environmental and related studies at UC Irvine. It is expected that each investigator has an ongoing successful research program and that this grant will initiate new collaborations. The only requirement at the end of the year will be delivery of a product (see examples below) that the Institute can assemble into a portfolio to highlight new dimensions in environmental research on campus.
Projects. Typical projects [with products listed in brackets] include support of: postdoctoral fellow [manuscript submitted to peer-reviewed journal or press]; doctoral student [a single chapter of thesis on a topic outside prime adviser's research]; sabbatical living expenses for visiting scholar or government leader [manuscript on the collaboration]; scoping conferences [summary of proceedings in addition to the talks]; year-long student project examining environment-society interactions in southern California, neighboring states, or nations [summary report]; and/or seed money to prepare a multi-PI grant [the grant proposal].
Proposals (two pages).
Page one: (i) short title, PIs, and contact information; (ii) summary paragraph including project objectives; (iii) brief summary of previous research in this area, innovative nature of the collaborations, and description of how research transcends disciplinary boundaries and/or addresses national needs; and (iv) brief description of the anticipated product to be delivered within one year.
Page two: (i) a summary table of the planned expenses and justification (N.B., PI salaries will not be funded); (ii) a brief summary of PIs’ current and pending extramural funding; and (iii) URL of the homepage describing PI's research, publications, and/or cv.
Submit proposals in digital PDF format to envinst@uci.edu. Please include Environment Institute Proposal in subject heading of email. Proposed projects will be judged on the quality and innovation of the research by a review panel, and final selection will be made by the Director. In some cases, additional supporting material may be requested by the review committee. For announcement of awards and project information, please check the Environment Institute web site (http://environment.uci.edu).
